Since the Oscars are just days away, I was inspired by the sophistication and formality of the evening. It’s exciting to watch the red carpet and see the beautifully designed gowns worn by some of our favorite movie starlets. What’s to say we can’t find an occasion to dress ourselves up every once in a while? Whether you have a wedding, a gala, or even an award show viewing party, take that as a chance to pull out your favorite dress and costume jewelry and pretend to be a movie star for a night!
I recently did an indoor photo shoot to capture this playful yet polished outfit. I love how an all-over black look exudes classic glamour and sophistication. It’s like a blank canvas where you can choose to add colorful accessories and get creative with your makeup. I love this particular outfit because it makes me feel refined and elegant, but it’s also fun and comfortable. The black tulle skirt adds a girly element to what could be a plain black dress. It also translates wonderfully on camera because of its rich texture. A lot of black dresses we see on the red carpet tend to fall flat on camera, but not this one! You just can’t help but want to twirl around your house while getting dressed for a night out.
I also love the modern neckline of the crop top I chose to wear. It’s kind of like a play on a typical halter neckline. The top flows out nicely, mirroring the slight flare of the skirt. The pleating of the top also adds a little bit of structure and even more texture. If you’re looking for a black formal dress for a night out, pay attention to small details like this because they are unique touches that speak about your style and your taste.
I added a pop of color to this black look with a long strand of Chanel pearls, which complements the classy aesthetic I was going for. There is something about a strand of pearls that can instantly make a woman feel posh. It’s easy to find a set of costume pearls, as they will always be in style. I also wore a pair of nude heels, with a dainty ankle strap tied in a bow. They are a sweet addition to this all-black ensemble.
I decided to keep my hair sleek and straight, because I knew I wanted a bold makeup look. I think the straight hair keeps this look youthful, while still elegant. I also chose a dark, purple color for my lips for a little bit of drama and to bring attention to my face. You can really complement a monochromatic outfit by doing a strong lip. Purple tones in lipstick are warm and rich, and can work for many women with various skin tones. You definitely don’t have to stick to a red lip in order to make a statement. If you’re looking to add a new element to your makeup routine for a night out, consider a dark plum lip as a new venture.
When you’re wearing a darker or bolder color on your lip, consider keeping your eye makeup neutral. I created a sultry smokey eye in a delicate way, playing with golds and browns while not overpowering my lipstick. The colors play well with the purple lip, and make my eyes shine. I applied just a thin layer of eyeliner, and I was sure to boost up my lashes with several coats of mascara. When going for a sophisticated look like this, makeup should be applied tastefully and carefully. You could even stay with a bold lip, and layer on the mascara with just a simple line of black eyeliner.
This whole look is appropriate for any type of formal occasion. Whether you want to feel like a glamorous movie star or a classic beauty, you can really make this look your own by how you choose to accessorize. I had so much fun dressing up, and I think that we should find more occasions in our life to play dress up because it truly makes you feel special. You can never be overdressed for an occasion, so have fun with it! Even if you’re just going out for a nice dinner with your hubby, shake the dust off of that formal dress you may have bought for a wedding, drape a strand of pearls over it, and walk into that restaurant with the intention of having all eyes on you! There’s no reason why the lobby of the restaurant can’t be your red carpet for the night. We all deserve to feel like a movie star at the Oscars every once in a while!
