When you’re looking for some out-of-the-box and truly unique beauty ideas to kick up your everyday makeup routine, the fashion runways are where it’s at. The only thing that could ever outshine the crazy clothes and luxury of a fashion show is the makeup and hair. While you probably shouldn’t copy the look for work the next day, it just shows what makeup is all about: new ways of combining colors and making your personality shine through. Right now, strobing is the latest trend and it is such a far stretch from the bronzy, saturated tones we’re used to seeing especially in these warm summer months. It’s not a new technique, and many European women opting for a natural look do this all the time. But unlike the contouring we’ve seen the past year, it’s not complicated and it’s starting to push contouring out of the ring.
On the 2015 runways, there was barely a contoured face in sight. So many designers opted for either dramatic eyes, or very natural looking beauty looks. Philip Lim showcased this bright, dewy look in his Spring/Summer show. Chanel focused on lightness and showcasing natural beauty, with all of the models looking fresh and shiny. Versace is always on point when it comes to strobing, and celebrities like Karlie Kross, Miranda Kerr, and Whitney Port have been showcasing the trend in gorgeous ways.
A lot of high fashion designers are taking to this strobing trend, which focuses on highlighting and very light, shimmering finishes. So if you’ve spent a lot of time perfecting your contouring, it’s time to put that on the back burner. Achieving this strobing look has little contouring involved, if any at all! That’s not to say you wasted those hours on YouTube searching the best tips. Strobing still helps you illuminate and sculpt your face with a brighter touch, so perfect for the summer. The highlighting involved in strobing will brighten your skin, making your gorgeous face shine like never before!
A lot of things you’ve learned from contouring still apply and will help you perfect your strobing. Think about all of the places the light naturally hits your face; your cheeks, your forehead, you chin, and your nose. You’re going to want to apply highlighter to those parts to direct the light there. That’s literally all you have to do! It’s so simple, it’s surprising that this is just becoming trendy. It’s a perfect summer makeup look because you can avoid caking on all of your contouring products that will probably just melt off after an hour at the beach. You’re still going to look radiant with this simple addition to any makeup look you choose!
While contouring can make you look flawless, strobing brings shine to the natural beauty you already have instead of putting on a sort of mask. You’re still playing with the structure of your face and possibly adding some depth, but not in a fake way because light hits your face in the areas you’re strobing anyways. And if a natural look is your thing, you’re going to love strobing.
Strobing can work for all of you ladies, but there are some things to keep in mind while purchasing your highlighters. If you have acne-prone skin or some little spots and bumps, you’re going to want to go the matte route. Oily products are only going to highlight those spots and you don’t want that. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money to achieve this look, you can probably just use the highlighters that you already have! There is no special product that you necessarily need. One of my top picks for a highlighter is the Mary-Lou Manizer, which is so versatile and affordable. I used the Benefit Watt’s Up highlighter first, then added the Mary-Lou Manizer second for even more shine. I’ve also heard great things about the Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector, which has some gorgeous champagne undertones.
