I’m so glad to be back in my hometown of Los Angeles, especially in downtown. There’s so many things to do in Los Angeles and see within walking distance of my apartment; I can only imagine how much there is to explore outside of downtown! Even though there’s still a lot to do (I have a long bucket list!), I compiled a list of what to do in Los Angeles including my favorite activities and restaurants to share with you. There’s only a few days left of summer so I hope you guys visit some of these places as well!
I love the experience of outdoor shopping, since you can enjoy the nice weather and get some exercise in! I’ve been going to Third St. Promenade frequently this past summer; it has a combination of high-end as well as lower end fashion. It’s also close to Santa Monica beach, in case you’re in the mood for a stroll by the beach after a shopping day. Another nice thing about going to an outdoor mall is the live street entertainment, it definitely makes your shopping experience so much more enjoyable. The Grove is another fun promenade to check out. If you’re into designer brands, Rodeo Drive has an expensive selection. Old Town Pasadena has a mix of small boutiques as well as popular brands.
You can find most of LA’s museums in downtown actually! There’s the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MOCA) as well as the new Broad museum, which is opening on September 20th. If you want to know more about history, there’s the Japanese American National Museum. Of course, there’s the coveted LACMA museum and its light posts located near Beverly Hills. LACMA occasionally has jazz nights, where visitors can relax and listen to mini concerts. For something more quirky, there’s the Madame Tussoud’s Wax Museum!
The gardens here in Los Angeles are always in full bloom (except for winter of course), and they’re absolutely gorgeous. I love going to Getty Villa and The Getty just for their gardens; both location are on hills, so there’s amazing views when you look into the horizon. Walt Disney Concert Hall also has a small garden at the top of their building. It’s a nice getaway from the busy streets of downtown. The most popular garden is the Huntington Library located in San Marino. You can spend hours here, and still not be able to see everything. In addition to gardens, the Huntington Library also has a small museum within their facilities.
Southern California is definitely known for their beaches, and since it’s still warm, I’ve been going to get my tan on frequently! My favorite beach has to be Malibu. It’s very clean and the sand feels so good in between my toes. I noticed that there’s less people at Malibu, which I can appreciate because it’s quiet, making it easier for me to relax. If I’m feeling more active, I’d hit up Santa Monica Pier because there’s always something to do there. There’s a mini amusement park on the pier, and great restaurants to dine in while watching the sunset. Another great beach day outing that me and Kas have been doing is riding beach cruisers down the strand around Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach. You can start as far down as Redondo Pier and just make stops along each pier for a drink, food or ice cream!
If you guys don’t know already, I’m always craving Asian food. Whether it’s sushi or orange chicken, I’m always on the hunt for good Asian restaurants. My hubby and I walk to Little Tokyo in downtown often, and our favorite sushi restaurant is Komasa. This is definitely a small hole-in-the-wall, run down place, but I think that gives the entire place a unique character. If we’re on the go, we love Kazunori or Sugarfish if we want to enjoy the ambience. Okay, enough about sushi! I’ve discovered delicious Chinese food in the San Gabriel Valley too, specifically the dumplings at Mama Lu’s. Now to my favorite part and since I have a major sweet tooth, I always have to eat dessert afterwards. Sweet Lady Jane on the westside has decadent cakes, and Bottega Louie’s cute macarons are good for a light dessert (or snacks!).
The list goes on and on! There’s still so much to discover in LA, and I’d love to hear where you guys go for great food and activities.
