I recently had one of my Youtube subbies ask me for some anti-aging tips so today I thought I’d let you all in on the tips and tricks I’ve learned throughout the years.
First of all, there are so many different opinions on when a woman should even start thinking about aging. It’s a fear most girls have, so much so that girls that are in their 20s are having botox! I definitely don’t think you need botox at 20, but you can start making decisions to prevent signs of aging in your 20s. It’s so much easier to prevent it than try to reverse it. It’s also easier to create good skin habits while you’re still young so they stick with you as you get older!
1. Wear Sunscreen Daily
One of the best things you can do for your skin – I know I sound like a broken record here – is to wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Sunscreen. Is. An. Absolute. MUST. I’ve told you guys in so many of my videos and blogs how important sunscreen is to everyone’s beauty routine. Check out my recent blog on my favorite sunscreens, and invest in some sunnies and a hat for more protection.
Tip: Make sure you’re not just focusing on your face – our hands and necks can also show signs of aging. Be sure to apply sunscreen to them as well!
2. Eat Healthy
What you’re putting into your body also affects the way your skin looks so try your best to drink as much water as you can and eat foods high in vitamins and antioxidants because all of these things will keep your skin nourished. Try to avoid eating too much overcooked or fried meat, salt, or foods that can cause inflammation like dairy and gluten.
3. Develop A Good Skincare Regimen
There are little things that you can (and should) be doing every day that will help keep your skin clear and youthful looking. For example, washing your face is a simple task that takes just a couple of minutes. And ladies, I don’t care how tired you are after a long night out, you NEED to wash your makeup off at night! The list of things your makeup can do to your skin if you sleep in it is just too long. Also, look for a gentle cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils.
There are two different types of exfoliators: physical and chemical. A clarisonic brush and a scrub are examples of physical exfoliants which are made to manually scrub away dead skin cells. A chemical exfoliator is a product that removes dirt and oil with acids like AHA’s or BHA’s. AHA, or Alpha Hydroxy Acid, helps wash away dead skin cells and bring forward all of your bright, healthy skin. It’s a good choice for dry skin. BHA, or Beta Hydroxy Acid, are similar to AHA’s expect that they are able to penetrate into the pores to pull out all of the dirt and grime from the skin and help keep it clear. It can dry out your skin, so you want to be careful when using this. Before trying either of these, talk to your dermatologist who can tell you which one is right for you.
5. Target Skin Concerns with a Serum
A serum is a good option if you want to target specific skin care concern like acne, hyper pigmentation, or dry skin. Look for serums with ingredients like vitamin C and retinoids which can help fade sun spots and reduce the look of wrinkles. Remember serums should be applied before your moisturizer. Also, don’t think you need to invest in a cupboard full of anti-aging serums. Your skin can get irritated and burnt out from all of that chemical exposure so be careful when making your selection. Less is more.
Speaking of moisturizer – make sure you use one! Your skin can only keep itself moisturized for so long by itself before it’ll need help every day. Get into the habit of using a moisturizer now, but also know the type of moisturizer you need can change as you get older.
Tip: Use products with hyaluronic acid to supercharge your moisturizer and smooth out wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body and when applied topically it has the ability to retain moisture. Hydraluron is a cult fave.
7. Use Eye Cream
The skin around your eyes is so thin that it’s often the first place to show signs of aging. I would tell younger girls to look for a basic eye cream that is moisturizing. As you get older, I recommend looking for products that help prevent fine lines or help reduce the look of existing lines.
8. Use A Silk Pillow Case
Another thing I want to bring up is that old wives tale that a silk pillow prevents wrinkles. My friends, it’s true! Swap out your cotton pillowcases with some luxe silk and your skin will thank you for it. Sleeping on your back can kind of help too.
9. Get A Facial
If you can – try and see a facialist once a month. They can let you know if your skin has changed at all, and give you some tips on what products are best for you. Extractions and exfoliations are going to help your skin look fresh and youthful.
I hope you all enjoyed learning all of my anti-aging tips – I know it was a lot, but it’s important to know what you can do now to take care of yourself. Just remember that you are beautiful no matter what!
