3 Ways You’re Brushing Your Hair Wrong

Beauty, hair
Sona Gasparian shows how to brush your hair.

If you guys are anything like me, you know that there’s always something you can do to improve your beauty routine! Today I thought I’d share a few tips on how to brush your hair properly. Hair care is super important because you wear your hair every day! Where you can change up your makeup or your outfit, your hair is there to stay. My hair can get a little bit frizzy or puffy (especially in the humidity!) but brushing it properly makes a huge difference! Here’s a few common mistakes you might make when brushing your hair, plus how to fix it!

Sona Gasparian shows how to brush your hair properly.

1. Brushing your hair with your head up.

When brushing your hair, tilt your head downward, almost as if you were going to try and touch your toes. Brushing your hair this way stimulates your scalp both from bending over and from the brush’s bristles. This promotes hair growth and a healthy scalp!

How to brush your hair. Brush when dry to prevent breakage.

2. Brushing your hair wet.

Brushing your hair wet causes more breakage than when you brush it dry. To prevent puffiness when brushing your hair, use a smoothing serum! Now, I have to note that if you have curly hair or want to detangle your hair, it’s totally okay to use a wide tooth comb on wet hair, just make sure to use detangler to protect your hair!

Sona Gasparian shows how to brush your hair using the right brush.

3. Using the wrong brush.

You’ll need a brush that’s meant for your hair type (check out this article to see what brush is best for you!) A paddle brush is the most universal brush to use. To avoid puffiness, do not use a comb on your hair, especially when its dry.

I hope you enjoyed learning how to brush your hair properly! When I learned these tips, it made such a difference! Which of you guys are guilty of these mistakes? Let me know in the comments!

This is so great Sona! My grandma actually taught me to brush my hair downward, and this helped me a lot because i used to have really crappy scalp, but ever since i did that it has actually helped a lot. Which at first didn’t make sense to me, but yeah! this is great!!!! Thanks for the extra info xx????

  • ReplyCindy BernabeOctober 21, 2016 at 7:06 am

I always know I’m doing damage when I brush my hair. My face cringes when I hear it breaking. But, I just recently starting using a leave in condition and a straightening serum right before I brush my wet hair. Can’t wait to see results ;) P. S. I love you!

  • ReplyEwelinaOctober 21, 2016 at 7:27 am

I’m guilty of #1, but I’ll definitely try to change it :) But besides that I treat haircare really serious :)

  • ReplySaariya AftabOctober 21, 2016 at 8:46 am

    Hi Sona,
I probabaly make all those mistakes! Thanks for the information I’ll make sure to incorporate the tips into my daily routine. I’ve heard you shouldn’t brush your hair twice a day, is that true? Also is it okay to brush your hair before you have a shower and then after even if it’s wet? Or is that just a complete no no? I find brushing it before and then brushing after I have less knots.
    Please reply xx

    • ReplyHannah IrwinOctober 21, 2016 at 12:28 pm

There is nothing wrong with brushing your hair twice. Brushing your hair more often can help prevent less tangles! Because it is really bad to brush out super tangled hair! I personally brush my hair before the shower and after I condition I use a wide tooth comb IN the shower. And after I use a leave in conditioner with detangling agents then brush it out. I also do this on clients!

  • ReplyHannah IrwinOctober 21, 2016 at 12:24 pm

I’m in cosmetology school and I learned that when detangling hair it helps to hold the brush vertically instead of horizontally.

  • ReplyNakisaOctober 21, 2016 at 3:35 pm

I have quite coarse and thick hair, with a wavy/curly pattern, and I often brush when my hair is wet (in the shower). However I think I might have to go out and try one of those universal brushes and try brushing my hair upside down haha :)

  • ReplySophie P.October 22, 2016 at 2:13 am

I only brushed my hair once, after the shower when my hair is wet ! But this was when my hair was longer…
Now that I have mid-length hair, I have to style them and so brush them a little bit more. Otherwise this looks like crazy bush haha !

  • ReplyLoreal TorresOctober 22, 2016 at 12:11 pm

Great tips and thanks for the link to the article about the brushes. I have thick wavy hair so I’m always afraid i’m using the wrong burshes.

  • ReplySara SyedOctober 22, 2016 at 12:32 pm

Can you please make a blogpost on how you maintain your hair? My hair is getting thinner day by day and it worries me?

  • ReplySadiaOctober 23, 2016 at 1:27 am
