If your holidays were anything like mine, the past few weeks have been a whirlwind of festive parties and dinners with lots of indulgent food and drinks. And even though right now I’m on vacation in the Caribbean, I still have some of my New Year’s resolutions in mind! After the holidays going into January, I like to do a detox so that I feel fresh and renewed for the New Year. A post-holiday detox doesn’t mean crazy juice cleanses or super restrictive diets, but small changes that can make you feel better and more refreshed! Here’s my New Year’s detox— I promise it’s easier than you think!
Sweating is one of the body’s ways of releasing toxins. And we could all use a little more exercise! This could be anything from walking more to trying out a whole new routine. I recently started doing hot yoga and I love it–the combination of movement and heat lets you sweat a lot, which is super detoxifying. Whether you love exercise or absolutely dread it, the best way to become more active is make it your lifestyle! That can mean walking or biking to work, picking up a new activity, going to the gym, or finding online exercise videos!
I am the first one to resist intense diets, but after lots of delicious calorie and sugar-packed food and drinks, I do try and focus on eating cleanly. This usually involves eating lots of veggies and lean protein. I also eliminate processed foods and limit carbs to one meal a day, which is one of the simplest ways to detox!
I also try and avoid alcohol for a few weeks, since it can make you feel bloated and has lots of empty calories. Caffeine is a hard one for me, but I’ll often switch out coffee for tea for my post-holiday detox!
The holidays can be extra hard on your skin from a combination of using more makeup and an unhealthy diet. Going makeup-free for a few days can let your skin breathe. I also try and use more natural products on my face, making sure to completely cleanse and tone my skin and by using detoxifying masks at night. Dry brushing your whole body and detoxing baths are also popular ways to detox your skin!
Diet has a huge impact on your skin, so try to drink lots of water and eat fruits and vegetables with a high water content, like cucumbers and leafy greens. You can see my post on 7 Beauty Foods for Healthy and Glowing Skin here!
Another small way to detox is to put aside your phone and technology for a few minutes before you go to bed and when you wake up! It help you center yourself and set goals for the day!
How do you detox? Tell me about it in the comments!
