The best products for your skin type

Beauty, Skincare
skincare recommendations

I’m always telling you guys how important it is to have a solid skincare routine. When you take care of your skin, it thanks you by staying youthful and healthy! So many of you ask me what products I use or what products you should use so I created a little guide of skincare recommendations based on each skin type.

Before you read the chart with my product recommendations, it’s important that you first get to know your skin before choosing which products you need. What are the different skin types? There’s oily, acne-prone, dry, normal and combination. Using products made specifically for your skin type is essential, and you can’t do that until you identify your skin type. Take a little trip to your makeup counter, aesthetician or a dermatologist and they can easily help you out.

Now that you know your skin type, here are some useful charts that will help you with product recommendations categorized by different skin types. You’ll find my recommendations for cleansers, moisturizers, eye creams and sunscreen.  You may see a few repeat products throughout the charts, like sunscreen and eye cream, and that’s because those products work well on various skin types.  Also I omitted toner from my skincare recommendations as it’t not a product I regularly use.

Please keep in mind everyones skin is a little different so I recommend sampling products before you buy them to make sure they will work for you.

For acne prone skin I recommend products with ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to help  clear up any breakouts.

For someone with dry skin, I recommend gentle cleansers and super hydrating moisturizers and eye creams.

If you have normal skin, you’re in luck. You can use a variety of products on the market however make sure you don’t use anything that is to harsh or abrasive.

If you have oily skin, I recommend products that help absorb excess oil and give the skin a matte finish.

I hope these charts inspires you to take the initiative to start a skincare routine and stick to it! Taking those few minutes each day and night to care for your skin will help keep your skin healthy and clear. It is an invest that truly pays off!

what about combination skin? any suggestions? I have oily T-zone and dry cheeks and sensitive skin as well. My face is sensitive to many chemical(do not know which all) , fragrance , heat and light too. :-(

Is it true that oily skin is actually dry skin? Would you then recommend that people that tend to have oily skin actually use the products that are for dry skin? Please help!!!

    • ReplyNina KöstingerAugust 4, 2016 at 7:32 am

Yes pleease reply!! Love you soo much :)

    • ReplySonaAugust 4, 2016 at 1:35 pm

I’m not sure I understand your question. If you have oily skin, you would use oily free light moisturizers, like the ones under the oily chart, to give some moisture to your skin. You wouldn’t use a super hydrating moisturizers like the ones I recommend for dry skin.

    • ReplyAshley LambertAugust 4, 2016 at 2:27 pm

From what I’ve heard from various sources, yes! Oily skin is skin overcompensating for dryness by producing too much oil. Many people with oily skin avoid moisturizers but that’s actually what your skin is trying to tell you it needs! However, moisturizers geared toward dry skin will probably be too heavy. I would personally recommend a light moisturizer or serum moisturizer.

Lovely post I really enjoy your blog, youtube videos and snapchat ?
You could do a similar recomendation for primers and foundation for each skin type.

    Much love from Chile ?

    • ReplySonaAugust 4, 2016 at 9:40 am

That’s a great idea!! Thanks for the suggestion!!!

  • ReplyLauraAugust 3, 2016 at 6:52 pm

Great post as usual! Thanks Sona for recommendations!
I agree with Carolina, you could do something similar with foundation, tinted moisturizers, BB creams, etc. for each skin type. That would be amazing.

  • ReplyNourhanAugust 3, 2016 at 8:17 pm

Thank you sona this is really a very helpful post

  • ReplyJessicaAugust 3, 2016 at 8:27 pm

I tend to have have somewhat dry skin, that is sensitive, and now is acne prone since I turned 30. Yay me, right?! I use the CeraVe cleanser at night, but have been on the hunt for a moisturizer that doesn’t break me out. Thanks for the chart =)

  • ReplyErikaAugust 3, 2016 at 9:28 pm

I love it! Its very helpful. Love you Sona ?????? I just bought the clinique cleanser and moisturizer because I have oily skin so I hope it works.

  • ReplyDaniellaAugust 4, 2016 at 5:19 am

LOVE the new sight!! Question – what fake tan product/s do you recommend? I have really dry sensitive skin.

    • ReplyAshley LambertAugust 4, 2016 at 2:32 pm

I also have extremely dry and sensitive skin! I am currently using the Tanwise mousse. It’s cheap (compared to Loving Tan), and I get it from Sally Beauty. Unfortunately though, the pumps on both bottles I’ve used have broken, so just a heads up :(. As long as I exfoliate first (with a loofah or body scrub that I know won’t upset my skin) I’ve never had any problems with patchiness.

  • ReplyTessaAugust 4, 2016 at 10:25 pm

Love this blog post so much!! So helpful!!! Always wanted to try some different moisturizers and cleansers but not sure which one will fit me the best and now I know!!!
But do you have any recommendations for different age groups on skin cares???
For example my mom and I are both using the Clinique eye cream, and sometimes I wonder wouldn’t it be too heavy for my early 20s skin???

It’s a GREAT post that I’ve ever seen so far. Thank you Sona for all your effort. The only thing which is also confusing alittle is that I always thought that oily skin and acne-prone skin are pretty much the same. Since my skin is both oily and acne-prone type, with which category of the chart I should go for?

  • ReplyKelsey MAugust 5, 2016 at 5:15 pm

Thanks for the charts, Sona! I have dry skin and was told by my family doctor to stay away from the Cetaphil cleanser because it tends to dry you out, so that would be my only concern with your post.

  • ReplyJanineAugust 7, 2016 at 5:35 pm

This is OT but I would love to see some video on using the tinted moisturizers/bb cream/cream blush/cream eye shadows. I go for a more natural look most of the time anymore I’m getting older and very active. It’s a challenge to figure out how to blend everything. Using foundation and powder shadows is easier to blend but I don’t use that much as I work 12-16 hrs in the trenches ( nursing). Like to run/walk/hike and bike. I like bobbibrowns metallic cream shadows and cream blush. Love your videos and blog. Just wish I looked like you when I’m done! Your gorgeous! Thanks for sharing?

Love these options Sona! I have combination skin and love using a gel moisturizer to hydrate my skin. Nature Republic’s Aloe Vera gel is my favourite (and super cheap)!

  • ReplyEstherAugust 16, 2016 at 10:41 am

What would you recommend for someone with sensitive dehydrated combination skin? Thanks.

    • ReplyJaneAugust 20, 2016 at 5:09 am

I personally adore Barbados line by Anna Lotan. This is an innovative company with very affordable products. Barbados line is suitable for setsitive skin. Many of their products are 99% natural, which is the best I’ve found for my allergies.
      I usually by it here:
