The Petite Girl’s Guide to Buying Jeans

Fashion
Sona Gasprian's Guide to finding the best jeans for petite women.

For as long as I’ve been working as a blogger, you’d think I’d be able to find the best jeans in a heartbeat, right? Unfortunately even for me, the jeans struggle is so real! For something we wear almost everyday, it’s amazing how hard it is to find that perfect pair. This whole task is made even more challenging by the fact that I’m petite and just a little bit curvy.

So how to find those elusive, flattering, lengthening jeans that make you feel amazing as soon as you put them on? Luckily, I have a few tips for finding the best jeans for petite women (and women of all sizes!)

Sona Gasaprian's shopping tips for finding the best jeans.

1. A dark wash is always lengthening.

I love a good distressed wash, but if I want to feel taller and slimmer, I reach for dark wash skinnies. For the same reason that black looks amazing, darker wash jeans are always a good option. Not only are dark wash jeans more polished, they’re chic and flattering!

2. A body-skimming silhouette looks good on everyone.

I don’t mean the skinny jeans that take a gymnastics routine to get into. I mean the pair that’s flattering in the right places. Jeans should always fit properly on the waist, hips, and thighs, whether you’re going for skinny jeans or wearing vintage Levis. This is especially important if you’re petite—poorly fitting jeans will take over your frame!

3. Check the inseam.

For all you petite girls, this is key! Your jeans should be cropped at the ankle or just above the ground. I love wearing ankle length jeans—showing just a little bit of skin at my ankle is so slimming and it makes me look taller! On the other hand, jeans that hit right above the ground make your legs look a mile long. Just make sure to take into account whether you’re going to wear your jeans with heels or flats when shopping and tailoring.

4. Look for a mid-rise.

For a good all-around pair of jeans, you don’t want a rise that is too high or too low. Look for jeans that hit around the top of your hips or just a little higher. This will create the most flattering line, making your legs look longer without the awkward gaping and bunching that can happen with a super high rise.

5. Find a label you love.

Once you’ve found the perfect pair, they’ll likely become your go-to jeans, so stick to them! I’m all about the skinny jeans from Madewell, so I have them in a few different washes. (They also offer free in-store hemming!) Like bags, shoes, and leather jackets, jeans are often worth the investment. A good pair of jeans will wear well and look better with age!

All great tips! At 5’2″ I don’t have much in terms of leg length, so I definitely need to follow these tips!

Thanks for this guide for jeans! I am short as well and I am always buying the wrong type of skinny jeans. I have trouble when I am wearing ankle boots because I always have to roll up my jeans and it looks awful!

    • ReplySonaOctober 26, 2016 at 10:30 am

I usually just roll mine up so that these’s just a little bit of skin showing between the jeans and the top of the boot! Hope this helps!

Hi Sona, thanks for the tips! With my length of 1,75 meter I don’t have to look taller, but you’ve got some great tips for taller girls as well :)

This is so weird because this is my life I don’t wear jeans just leggings because of this. All my jeans I have to fold if i not am tripping over them and I can’t go for fashion jeans like the ones with rips because am small the cut is at the wrong positions. Unfortunately I live in England, the north west so we don’t have many big shops down here but I shall look online with these tips in mind thanks sona

Hi, I live in the U.K. and Topshop has a petite jeans range that you should look into. Also ASOS has a petite range including jeans hope that helps!

I’m 5’3 and still searching for the perfect jeans. I want some that are soft and hug all the right places. A friend recommended I try Nordstrom because they have a lot to choose from and most likely I will find a pair that fits perfect. Maybe this time I will splurge on the perfect pair of jeans and buy them in every color. Great post. Which brands do you love?

    • ReplySonaOctober 26, 2016 at 10:23 am

Hi Jeanette, I really like Madewell! Nordstrom definitely does have a large selection too so you should be able to find something you like there as well!

  • ReplyJenniferOctober 25, 2016 at 8:00 am

Great tips! I’m 5’5, but I have really short legs (long torso) so I usually always have to get my jeans hemmed.

  • ReplySadiaOctober 25, 2016 at 8:00 am

I’ve always been a black jeans girl and refuse to wear anything else so the dark wash is definitely something I will look for!! I’m from the UK and my fav jeans are from Next… they have an amazing tall range that makes finding the perfect jeans that much easier!!

    • ReplySonaOctober 26, 2016 at 10:33 am

A really dark wash is a great alternative to black jeans!

  • ReplyMarifer Aguilera RoizOctober 25, 2016 at 8:11 am

Great tips! I always have problems when I’m looking to buy some jeans. I found a favourite brand and their jeans fit me perfectly, but unfortunatly they are quite expensive for my budget.

  • ReplyDenaOctober 25, 2016 at 1:42 pm

I am 5’3″ so jeans have always been a struggle! I mainly buy mine at Gap since they have ankle length. But I know I should probably invest in a good pair and get them tailored. Sometimes even the short/ankle length is too long! Thanks for the helpful post!

  • ReplyNakisaOctober 25, 2016 at 2:10 pm

This a great guide Sona..all tips which I personally follow too! One other thing I notice that makes a big difference is how thick the denim material is of the jeans. Sometimes thinner denim can be more slimming on curvier girls, whereas thicker denim (like the classic Levis) can add a bit more to the figure of a more slender girl xx

  • ReplyAlejandra S RegaladoOctober 25, 2016 at 3:02 pm

Love this post. You gave some really AMAZING tips I am 5.4 but my lower body/Legs are short so I always buy pants from petite section. Will keep these points in mind next time when I go shopping :) #Snapchatfam

  • ReplyCinderelli18October 25, 2016 at 7:17 pm

I’m definitely in the hunt for good jeans. I’m a pretty slim girl so none of my gym are pretty flattering. Not that they can work miracles, but still! Thanks for the tips Sona ?

  • ReplyBerta M.October 25, 2016 at 8:36 pm

Great post Sona, it’s such a struggle finding the perfect pair of jeans when you’re short. Definitly going to keep these tips in mind when shopping for jeans next time! Love you xoxo #snapchatfam

Thanks for the tips! I like the Topshop jeans :-)

  • ReplywassilabOctober 26, 2016 at 10:25 am

this is a real struggle for me as i’m short, and really curvy. i have a small waist and large hips, finding the right fit is nearly impossible, so all me jeans go to the tailor. but as long as i can go in, it can close and i can breathe, i’ll be happy.
thank you for the tips Sona. love you <3 #snapchatfam

  • ReplyMaryOctober 26, 2016 at 10:31 am

Hi love , I’ve been hunting for a new pair of jeans for the past 5 months now! Liked a few but none of them were the perfect fit! Glad you wrote this post now! I’m going to go and get one soon now ! Unfortunately madewell isn’t in India but I do love the Zara jeans. They fit me really well but I always feel they make me look a little shorter. I think il try folding them a bit ? Anyways , a great post again! Much love?Xoxo #snapchatfam
