5 Steps to Take a Casual Outfit to the Next Level

Fashion
sona gasparian's 5 ways

Do you guys ever have those days when you just feel uninspired to put together an outfit? I know this happens to me more than I’d like to admit! Maybe it’s the weather dragging you down, or you just don’t love anything in your closet, but whatever the reason, it’s something that happens to all of us! I’ve always found that the days where I’m just not feeling it are the days when I really need to dress up! Thankfully, I have a few tips for how to take a casual outfit to the next level!

sona gasparian's tips for how to elevate a casual outfit to the next level

I almost always reach for jeans and a tee shirt in the morning, and after a week or so of wearing the same outfit, I feel like I need to do something to shake up my look. When going for an entirely new, unique outfit isn’t in the cards (hello, Tuesday morning!) I rely on a few simple tips to take my basic outfit to the next level. In the case of the look I’m wearing here, it’s a few small details that elevate the outfit.

sona gasparian's tips for how to elevate a casual outfit to the next level

1. Wear an extra layer.

This can be a jacket, a sweater, or another shirt. Even if it’s in a neutral color, like my sweater is here, it gives your look an extra dimension. Make sure that some of your base layer peeks out just a bit, like my striped turtleneck is here.

2. Add some sparkle.

I rarely leave the house without sparkly jewelry! A little bit of jewelry adds a personal and unique aspect to your casual outfit. I have a dish of rings that I usually grab and stack on my way out the door. (You can read all about my jewelry essentials in this post here!)

3. Wear statement-making shoes.

I think this is my favorite step! Slipping on your favorite bold shoes instantly elevates your look from basic to stylish! Right now, I can’t get enough of these Gucci loafers that KB gave me for my birthday. The pink embroidered roses make them so special!

4. Bring in some contrast.

Adding in a piece with a color that stands out brings new interest to your look. Even though my brown leather tote is still technically a neutral, the warmer hue makes a statement against the black and cool tones of my outfit.

5. Wear a hat!

Nothing makes an outfit stand out like a hat! A wide brimmed felt hat is the perfect finishing touch for this outfit, complementing the neutral palette. Knit beanies, baseball caps, or a felt hat, like this one,  can do so much to dress up a casual outfit!

Love this post girl! I remember when these shoes just came out I thought they were so weird, but now I absolutely love them!
By the way, I watched your video with your dad and couldn’t stop cracking up! Our Armenian parents are the best haha

I definitely cannot pull off a hat but I really do wanna up my style by dressing more “professional, casual”. I’m a tshirt and converse kinda girl, so I need to change it up :) haha

  • ReplyJennifer BairdJanuary 24, 2017 at 11:08 am

Love this!!! It’s fun to rediscover what is in ones closet and helpful on days when I’d rather wear my pjs lol.

  • ReplySarah MaingotJanuary 24, 2017 at 11:13 am

I needed this today! I feel like I have similar taste in clothing as you and sticking to jeans and a t shirt is what I mostly do. I love the layered sweater over a turtle neck. I’m definitely going to try it out!

    • ReplySonaJanuary 24, 2017 at 11:44 am

Layering a sweater over a turtleneck looks really cute and it’s so warm! I totally recommend it :) xoxo

Sona jan, somehow I am starting to dig those loafers. Been avoiding them for almost a year now, I think if you keep making them look this good I’ll get one soon! ???

  • ReplyBlush & PearlsJanuary 24, 2017 at 11:37 am

Adding accessories or a great statement necklace is my favourite way to bling up a casual look. Great tips!

This is so cute, simple yet put together super nicely. I need to start doing things like this! I love reading your blogs cause I really do learn a lot from it! ?
On your Goals Blog I told you I wanted to start my own YT channel this year. My husband got me a camera for my birthday which is this coming Friday! So I will be starting soon! I’m so nervous/scared, and I wanted to tell you that you have been a very huge inspiration for me to do this, & for that I thank you Sona!
    Love you girl! ?

I’m into layering now because here in Hungary the weather is killing me. It”s so cold. Jeans and a pulover my go to these days, but I always want to shake it up a little beat. It was good to read this post, I think about get some nice rings.

  • ReplyLeahJanuary 24, 2017 at 2:16 pm

I love wearing a cozy sweater when it’s cold. However, I want to start layering as well. I also need to remember to put jewelry on. Great tips!

  • ReplyMelissaJanuary 24, 2017 at 3:04 pm

This is such cute outfit! I never think of layering pieces to an extra dimension. When I layer its usually for function, another layer for warmth or a cami under a sheer top so my bra isn’t showing when I’m at the office. But this is a total eye opener, plus if my kids spill something on me, I’ll have another cute top right underneath!

  • ReplyPraiseJanuary 24, 2017 at 3:25 pm

Thanks for the tips sona. I definitely prefer layering outfits when its ‘s cold.

  • ReplyGina BrandowJanuary 24, 2017 at 6:55 pm

Layers, layers, layers!! I like adding dimension to my look. I am also like you, Sona…can’t leave the house without a touch of sparkle! ;) PS I’m so glad you included the rings you wear in this post! I admire your rings everytime I see one of your YouTube tutorials ? Xoxo! #snapchatfam

  • ReplyCassandra LopezJanuary 24, 2017 at 8:25 pm

It depends on what I am doing for the day :)

If I am going to be active and running around everywhere, I like to layer up so I can be as comfy as possible :) If I will be still for most of my day then I prefer a warm comfy sweater :)

    Love you!

  • ReplyJuliaJanuary 25, 2017 at 4:00 am

I don’t do much layering as I’m curvy, but I think the best bag you can afford and a cute jewellery makes a huge difference. Beautynmoda/insta

  • ReplyEwelinaJanuary 25, 2017 at 3:12 pm

These are great tips! I do layering all the time, I guess it’s a must during winter in Europe :) I usually pair up turtleneck with an elegant jacket, it looks chic and it’s so warm. But I also love sweaters, especially when I know I’m gonna have a long day and I want to be comfortable. I love jewerly as well! I can’t leave the house without earrings. Golden hoops are my favourite :)
    Hugs! #snapchatfam

I always always love your tips <3

  • ReplyAycaJanuary 26, 2017 at 4:27 pm

I have different colors of Polo sweaters just those kinds of days ? And also colors of shawls ? I just combine one of my polo sweaters with one of my shawls and get out. It’s a easy way out when you don’t feel like spending time and effort for the outfit those particular days ?

  • ReplyLusine NaljayanJanuary 26, 2017 at 8:19 pm

Great work on this article, I really love the photos and this cozy vibe that goes with the subject of the article. I love layering but I have to admit I’m always lazy and just put one big layer on cold days. I really like how the striped top goes with the sweater.
    Love

  • ReplyJeanine A.February 12, 2017 at 7:58 pm

Thanks for the advice! I’d rather layer just because like you said you can add a little something different :)
