How to Apply Foundation: Brush, Beauty Blender or Silisponge?

Beauty, makeup
sona gasparian decisdes which is best to apply foundation, beauty blender, brush or silisponge?

Hi loves! Have you seen the recent craze over the Silisponge? New tools to apply foundation have been all over the internet lately, and it can be difficult to decide what’s best! Of course, there’s the traditional brush, the Beauty Blender, which seems to have taken over the beauty world, and now there’s the silicone applicator, the Silisponge. So I decided to put these three tools to the test, to determine once and for all the best way to apply foundation!  You can check out my video discussing each tool embedded in the post below or on my YouTube channel!

The Beauty Blender

Beauty Blenders have become a really popular tool since they’re so easy to use and give you sheer, even coverage. I really love how beautifully it blends your makeup, but it definitely eats up a lot of product. I’d recommend saving the Beauty Blender for special occasions if you’re trying to conserve your foundation and makeup!

The Brush

For everyday, I think a brush is your best bet! I use a fluffy brush rather than a flat foundation brush because I think it blends better. Unlike the BeautyBlender, it doesn’t waste a ton of makeup and gives you a smooth, medium coverage that is perfect for your day to day makeup routine!

The Silisponge

If you’re really trying to save product, the Silisponge by MollyCosmetics is your best bet! Since it’s just a piece of silicone, it doesn’t absorb any makeup and is super easy to clean. But, to be honest, I didn’t really love using it since you can’t use it for concealer, it didn’t blend well, and I felt like the makeup was just sitting on top of my skin. To fix this, you could go over your foundation again with a sponge or a brush to blend a bit more. (P.S. The sponge linked below is a dupe for the Silisponge that I found on Amazon!)

So in conclusion, I think the winner is the foundation brush! It’s easy to use and doesn’t waste expensive foundation while giving you a smooth, flawless finish. I do like using a BeautyBlender and wouldn’t count it out, but it does waste a lot of makeup. The Silisponge is definitely my last choice, even though it wastes no makeup at all and is easy to clean, the application just wasn’t as nice!

What tool do you use to apply foundation? Tell me in the comments!

Love this! I always use a brush – the Sigma F80, after I watched some of your videos and you recommended it!! But I’ve always wondered if the Beauty Blender would be better, so this post is so helpful! Thanks Sona!

    • ReplySonaMarch 16, 2017 at 10:59 am

Thank you! That’s a great brush to use!! :)

  • ReplyKarinMarch 16, 2017 at 10:25 am

This post is really helpful. Thank you Sona, you’re always on point. I love using brush for applying makeup and then for concealer and blending everything together I use the beauty blender, that works the best for me. The beauty blender takes some product away, so that the excess product is not just sitting on my face. ?

Thanks for this post! I love using my Beauty Blender.

  • ReplyKRUPAMarch 16, 2017 at 10:33 am

I learned something new today!! I actually was unaware that a fluffy foundation brush would word better than the flat one, & I do see creasing and streaks if I use the flat foundation brush so I would opt for a beauty sponge which would soak up quite a bit of product. Nice post!! :) xoxo #snapchatfam ??????

Thanks, love! I’m so happy you liked the post!! xoxo

Ever since the beauty blender came out, I had always thought that it was better than a foundation brush because people were saying that if you wet the sponge that it would absorb less of the foundation and give you perfect coverage. However, after reading this post, it did get me thinking that it does have a lot of foundation marks left on the sponge. So, I will definitely be taking your advice and using the sponge just for special occasions and be using the foundation brush for everyday wear. Great post!

  • ReplyEwelinaMarch 16, 2017 at 11:11 am

Great post! I’ve seen this silisponge everywhere but I was really sceptical about it. If you say it doesn’t blend well than I guess I won’t try it. I think a sponge is the best for me. It actually gives me very good coverage, much better than any other tool, so I guess I’ll stick to it. But I hate washing it though :)

I love the beauty blender but I hate the fact that it eats up all the foundation! I use my foundation brush for my everyday makeup.

Yeah I totally save my beauty blender for special occasions (haha when I get my eyebrows done) and I’ve got to try that IT cosmetics brush – it look so perfect for concealer and blending around small curves of the face but the only problem is how would you store it because my brushes are always standing up?

  • ReplySovina SiengMarch 16, 2017 at 3:14 pm

Im a beginner to makeup and have only tried a beauty blender. Reading that you would recommend a foundation brush makes me want to try it out?. I sure do love the beauty blender though. Also as i see reviews of the silisponge it is quite awesome that they invented those I would have never even thought to use that. Thanks for this awesome post! Very informative?

Hola Sona! Han salido miles de herramientas para aplicar la base pero definitivamente yo me quedo con la Beauty Blender, me funciona genial y es super practica de llevar a todos lados.

you literally read my mind since I had been wondering which is the best, and ESPECIALLY pondering on the popular Silisponge. Thank you so much for this! It’s so helpful! <3

Also, what i like to do sometimes is apply the foundation onto my face with my finger, and then use a brush to blend it out :) I FEEL & THINK it saves me even more product…. but idk if that's true lol. But it works :)

  • ReplyAnum KhanMarch 17, 2017 at 5:18 pm

Thanks for this helpful review Sona! I found the best tool for applying foundation after watching your videos and that is IT cosmetics kabuki brush. It saves time and definitely saves the product as well. Thankyou for being such a nice influence on so many girls out there who are trying to make a mark for themselves in different walks of life ❤ I love your personality! Xoxo #snapchatfam. Hello Sona.
i totally agree with you, i think i’m used to the beauty blender.
I should definitely give the brush a try.
    TY x

I just watched the video! I was considering buying the silisponge, because everyone seemed to love it so much. Ever since the beauty blender became a thing, I’ve been obsessing over it and I forgot how much I love using my foundation brush! I would say I go back and forth between my brush and beauty blender, depending on how much coverage I want. Your review was so helpful, thanks girl! :D

  • ReplyAycaMarch 19, 2017 at 1:35 am

I don’t use foundation everyday. But if I have the time and I want a flawless look, I definitely go with a brush (sigma kabuki). If I am in a rush and i want an easy but fast application I use the beauty blender. So basically, in my daily routine, I use a beauty blender since time is limited in the mornings. But if I have an occasion and have a full makeup on, I will use the brush. I recently got the silisponge, but since I only tried it for my daily routine for the concealer, just for the reasons that you mentioned about in the video, I didn’t find it useful. It’s funny how I thought exactly same things about these applicators and how I used them are the same way. I’m happy that I’m getting the hang of this thing :) Thank you for it :) #snapchatfam

Great post! Sona what eyeshadow are you using?

  • ReplyMaëva AttraitMarch 21, 2017 at 2:49 am

Amazing article, just like the video ! I am really sure I want to try the Silisponge because as you said it definitely seems harder to blend with. I had been loving my beauty blender but I am getting tired of it as it does sheer out the products a lot so I am thinking of buying the It Cosmetics Brush you’ve been using a lot because it seems amazing – just like you I don’t really like the flat foundation brushes.
Thank you for your articles and videos, they are among my favorites because you are so calm, informative and fun and I really like that energy. I enjoy watching your tutorials because they are always wearable and that is something that I look for because even if some youtuber’s make up looks are amazing, viewers mostly look for wearable looks and you manage to do that while still offering natural and more glam looks

I personally like the olive young aqua puff and the rt expert face brush

  • ReplyLauren Faith GuirnaldaMarch 30, 2017 at 9:51 am

I love using a brush , then a beauty blender right after ! I’ve only used the silisponge once , so I can’t really say if it’s worth it ? #snapchatfam

  • ReplychaimaeMay 2, 2017 at 1:41 pm

thank you sona, i prefer using the beauty blender

  • ReplyAjSharipovaMay 23, 2017 at 4:34 pm
