Look Like a French Girl With These 5 Beauty Tips

Beauty, makeup
how to get french girl makeup

It’s Paris Fashion Week and I’m getting major French girl beauty and makeup inspo. Seriously, is it just me or do French girls look effortlessly flawless 24/7? From their perfectly tousled, just-rolled-out-of-bed hair, to their glowing skin and barely-there makeup, you can say I’m très obsessed! I love their natural, minimal approach to getting ready and have decided to break down how to get that Parisian je ne sais quoi look.

TIP #1: SKINCARE COMES FIRST

It’s no secret that French girls know how to take care of their skin. They’re all about embracing their own beauty. That means taking their makeup prep very seriously. To get that French glow, always make sure your skin is properly cleansed before applying your makeup. I love using this very popular French micellar water from Bioderma (it’s also a great gentle makeup remover!) Next, it’s a good idea to hydrate your skin with a face oil like this one from Herbivore.

TIP #2: CHOOSE CREAMS OVER POWDERS

When it comes to achieving the fuss-free, no makeup look, French girls love nourishing, cream-based products over powders. To get a natural-looking base and to even out my skin tone, I applied the Erborian CC créme with my fingers (see my review here!). It’s very light and perfect for faking a bare face. Then, I applied a small amount of Kiko Milano cream bronzer to play up my bone structure.

TIP #3: KEEP BROWS & EYES NATURAL

But first, BROWS. French girls keep their brows full, boyish and never overly filled in. To achieve this look, Glossier’s Boy Brow is my go-to affordable pick. The subtle black tint adds the perfect amount of color and keeps the brows tamed. When it comes to copying the envied French girl eye makeup, less is truly more. Rather than spend 30 minutes in the morning trying to get perfectly even liner, the typical Parisian is probably going to skip the eyeliner and use her fingers to dab some color on her eyes. The Caviar Stick by Laura Mercier is a great option for quick application and a natural color on the lids. Top it off with a lengthening mascara like this one from Lancôme and voilà!

TIP #4: GO FOR A TINTED LIP BALM

Probably the most “French” thing about me is my obsession with tinted lip balms. They’re great because they keep your lips super moisturized and are perfect for everyday wear. I love the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in the color punch for a subtle and French girl-approved tint.

TIP #5: EMBRACE MESSY HAIR

The famous French girl tousled hair…Seriously, do they wake up like that?? Well, for all of us who don’t wake up like that, we can totally fake it. All you need is a thick barrel curling iron or wand (this is my favorite) and a generous amount of texturizing spray or cream. The trick is to only wrap your hair around the barrel for a few seconds and to run your hands through your hair once it cools. Plus, after sleeping on your hair, your hair will look even more French!

I wish I could do this but my oily skin and scars from having PCOS would be showing way to much so I’ve gotta stick with the fuller coverage matte products! I’ll definitely Riley be trying so more laid back eyes to go with my natural brows that I usually try to rock though! ❤️❤️

    • ReplyJessica AzerFebruary 28, 2018 at 3:29 pm

So beautiful and I love anything that has to do woh France! What color is that Laura Mercier caviar stick in?

      • ReplySimplySonaMarch 1, 2018 at 5:21 pm

Hey Jessica! The Laura Mercier color is in Amethyst.
You planning on trying it? :)

    • ReplySimplySonaMarch 1, 2018 at 5:20 pm

Hey babe, I don’t worry, I love my full coverage too! The natural brows will be such a cute, Parisian addition to the natural look. Can’t wait to hear how you rock this!

      • ReplyJessica AzerMarch 3, 2018 at 7:10 pm

I been wanting to try the caviar sticks but wasn’t sure which colors are worth getting (they are all so beautiful), but I love the way this looks on you, looks like I might need to make a trip to Sephora lol..any other colors you would recommend for everyday/Parisian wear?! Thank you!

Sona you are on top of your game lately with the blog!! As an oily skinned girl I’m not a huge cream fan altho what I’ll do sometimes is when using a cream highlight apply a little powder on top to still get the creamy dewiness without it melting off my face! Also when I think of Paris I think of a bold red lip ?❤️

    • ReplySimplySonaMarch 1, 2018 at 5:23 pm

Yes babe, you’ve got it down. Powder on top of cream is the best way to go!

  • ReplyPamelaFebruary 28, 2018 at 1:11 pm

Too bad I can find a CC/BB cream for fair amd oily skin ? Love this post and you look gorgeous

  • ReplyCristianaFebruary 28, 2018 at 1:30 pm

Tinted moisturizers and CC/BB creams are my favorites. This way I can keep a more simple eyes/lips makeup for everyday. You created such a nice look, and I love your hair, it looks so healthy and bouncy. Tu es la meilleur, bisous! :)

    • ReplySimplySonaMarch 1, 2018 at 5:24 pm

Great minds think alike babe. :)
So glad that you love this look!

  • ReplyMonicaFebruary 28, 2018 at 5:42 pm

This has literally been my routine even though I didn’t know it was French of doing it..?
I wanted a natural everyday look and since it’s winter I’ve been using all cream products instead of powder which most of the times end up clinging to my dry patches.? I’m glad to know it’s French beauty routine as well.. ?

    • ReplySimplySonaMarch 1, 2018 at 5:27 pm

Lol, you are French and you had no idea!
And, not to mention, you’re ahead of the game.

  • ReplyDenaFebruary 28, 2018 at 6:27 pm

Your hair is #goals. I’m so lacking in the hair department, I never do anything to it. I want to curl it but I have so much and it’s very thick. I feel daunted at the thought, lol. I have a shadow stick from Kiko that is a knockoff for the Caviar sticks and I love it!

    • ReplySimplySonaMarch 1, 2018 at 5:29 pm

      Hey love!
I have a lot of hair too, but what I love about curling is that you can wear it like this for a few days without washing it. Let me know if you ever try it!

  • ReplySaralrb2602February 28, 2018 at 6:31 pm

well Sona you pretty well observe my people (I’m french :)) I’m almost agree with what you said but I need to tell you than it take a lot of time to look effortless and natural, in fact we almost take same time as you to put the makeup on and the hair too. It’s just the way we used product than change. But more people apply and wear makeup like American now cause of internet and it’s not a bad thing. But it’s more night look. So it’s interesting how population can appropriate something and give them their own style. It’s the good thing about internationalization, you can take what’s interesting and give it your style !! :)

  • ReplyLusine NaljayanFebruary 28, 2018 at 6:40 pm

Wow. You’ve made it so simple and effortless. ❤️? I was looking at the pictures and thinking that it’ll be very difficult to achieve a French kinda look. But girl you blown me away. Can’t wait to look a French lady. ?
Natural brows looks so amazing. I’m loving Dua lips brows a lot these days.

  • ReplyGFebruary 28, 2018 at 7:29 pm

I have never understood why people think French girls are known for their skin. I have gone to France every year of my life (almost 35 years old). When I think of girls that take care of their skin it is Korean or Japanese girls. Most French women look older than their age because they smoke (highest percentage of women smokers besides Belgium).

Looking so cute. It’s always a big yes from me for minimal makeup looks. By doing do we look pretty and classy at the same time rather than putting tons of makeup.
Cream products blends so well in the skin that no one tell you’ve out any product on. BB cream is best for daily natural foundation look. I haven’t tried CC cream yet. I’m thinking to give it a try.

    • ReplySimplySonaMarch 2, 2018 at 3:20 pm

Hey babe, try that CC Cream and tell me what you think. Can’t wait to hear!

Everything looks so effortless, love it! You’re right Sona sometimes we don’t have 30min to do make up⏰?especially being a mum and trying to put your make up when your 3,5 year old is wandering around and trying to explore your make up bag’s content ?I love to put CC cream for a natural healthy looking skin, throw some eyeshadow on the lids, mascara, bit of blush and quick lippie??and it’s done under 10min??I’m looking at your hair and I’m definitely growing mine, the color and style is so beautiful! Very feminine ??Sending love from London ??#24minclub

Hi love, you’re always so kind on my socials. I appreciate your love and support, means the world to me!
Let me know how you like the Erborian!

  • ReplypearleeshakeMarch 1, 2018 at 11:40 pm

what moisturizer from the drugstore do you suggest? I have oily combination skin where the rest of my face is normal to dry and my T-zone (especially my nose) is soooooo oily. I only use concealer to cover my undereye darkness and i feel like it ages me coz my undereyes are so dry as well. it’s so hard to get that glow without looking a greaseball.

    • ReplySimplySonaMarch 2, 2018 at 3:17 pm

I recommend either the Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer or the Aveeno Clear Complexion Moisturizer for using multiple times a day.
They are both amazing drugstore options and are super hydrating for dry skin! Hope this helps babe.

  • ReplyAmyMarch 2, 2018 at 9:02 am

I am OBSESSED with French beauty. In the US we have such a ‘more is better’ attitude and honestly I’m just over it! This is so refreshing. Thank you!

  • ReplyAstrid LeydenMarch 2, 2018 at 10:12 am

I loved Paris when I was there for my engagement. It does something to you, just gives you an amazing feeling. I love using erborian cc cream of bare minerals gel moisturizer for a more natural look, and definitely a tinted lip balm like the Bobbie brown lip balm. I also usually wear my hair in braids when I sleep so the next day, I can just take it out and vavavoom! “Natural wavy hair” ;) Great post! :)
