The $6 Setting Powder That Actually Works

makeup, Product Review
The best drugstore setting powder

If you’re not using a translucent powder in your makeup routine, then you’re seriously missing out (especially if you have oily skin!) A setting powder is an absolute MUST for mattifying shine, smoothing pores and keeping your makeup in place. Some of the best ones can be pricey (this one is worth every penny), but if you’re on a budget, I’ve got you covered with this affordable setting powder. Meet the Covergirl Professional Loose Powder. It’s $6 bucks and yes, it actually works!

The best cheap setting powder

HOW TO USE SETTING POWDER:

STEP 1:

Dampen a beauty blender with some water (a damp beauty blender is best for locking your makeup in and works better than a brush or dry beauty blender!)

STEP 2:

Fully coat a beauty blender with the loose powder

STEP 3:

If you have normal to dry skin:

After applying foundation and concealer,  set your makeup by pressing the loose powder on your under-eye and T-zone areas (forehead, nose & chin.)

If you have oily skin:

Use the loose powder to set your entire face (this will lock your foundation in for hours and keep your oily skin in check.)

TRY IT:

Using setting powder is great for keeping your makeup shine-free for hours. Do you guys use setting powder?

PS. Let me know your favorite under $10 makeup in the comments below!

  • ReplyCatrinaMarch 21, 2018 at 4:15 pm

I’m going to have to try this powder. I have oily skin and don’t wear any powder. I never know what to buy. Favorite makeup product under $10 would have to be the rimmel retractable eyeliner. I always use the brown color :)

    • ReplySimplySonaMarch 21, 2018 at 4:34 pm

Your life will be changed after using powder! It is definitely a game changer. After you use it, let me know how you like it. :)

  • ReplyDenaMarch 21, 2018 at 4:19 pm

I was using the Laura Mercier but in an effort to save money I now use the Coty Airspun powder. I actually did a side by side wear test one day and there was no difference!

  • ReplyMonicaMarch 21, 2018 at 4:29 pm

I love the RCMA powder because it doesn’t give me a flashback and sets my base beautifully.. I’m gonna give this a try.. hope it doesn’t give any flashback in the pictures..?

    • ReplySimplySonaMarch 21, 2018 at 4:38 pm

There’s nothing like affordable powders! I love setting powders because they stay on forever and even if you have oily skin they cover well.
Can’t wait to hear how you like this!

  • ReplyZainab sabahMarch 21, 2018 at 4:39 pm

Really want to try this loose powder after reading your review. Setting powder is really important for my makeup routine!

I am excited for you to try this babe. Thanks for the love, xx.

  • ReplyCindy JimenezMarch 21, 2018 at 4:40 pm

I actually never used a translucent powder until Melissa Alatorre recommended the No7 powder. So far it’s great! For my dry skin I do exactly as you say above (under eyes & T-zone.) when I finish it though, I’ll definitely try the CG one.

    • ReplyAyeshehMarch 22, 2018 at 11:36 am

I’ve been using Laura Mercier one for years but I do trust your recommendations so I’ll have to pick it up!

  • ReplyBobbi ReadyMarch 21, 2018 at 4:55 pm

Thank you! I have been trying to find the answer for setting powder, so this really helps!

    • ReplySimplySonaMarch 21, 2018 at 5:08 pm

Ahh, I am so excited for you to try this! So glad that this helped you babe.

  • ReplyBarbaraMarch 21, 2018 at 5:11 pm

I use the Coty but with a brush, I’ll have to try it with a sponge, I love sponges for my foundation. I heard Banana powders were good, any comments on that?

  • ReplyMaria RodriguezMarch 21, 2018 at 5:20 pm

Thanks so much Sona for the great find! A lot of people go for the airspun powder but honestly ive tried it and it gives me a ton of flash back! Thanks so much definitely trying this one thank you thank you!

  • ReplyPreetiMarch 21, 2018 at 5:29 pm

I am new to makeup and just started to build up my collection. I ordered my Persona Identify palette today and would love such more affordable options Sona. Thank you for your suggestions. Helping a girl on budget ?

  • ReplyMayra VinuezaMarch 21, 2018 at 6:06 pm

I used to use a sponge but now I use a duo fiber brush. I don’t wear makeup for long thats why I do it this way and I don’t like a heavy feeling either. I use it cosmetics for winter and the rest of the year the one and only laura mercier

  • ReplyLouise SharpyMarch 21, 2018 at 6:25 pm

I just love more affordable options. I actually have used It cosmetics , and Cody Airspun. So now I will try this. Cannot wait #24hourclub. Love how you have all these helpful posts

  • ReplyJacquelineMarch 21, 2018 at 7:17 pm

I have been using the Laura Mercier and few months ago I bought the La Mer loose powder, both look beautiful and do the job. However, I find myself using the La Mer one on special occasion only and Laura Mercier on a daily basis. I will definitely try the CG and see how that works with my combination skin. I’m always looking for affordable dupes that get the job done. Thank you Sona for your reviews and alerting us of affordable products…Have a great rest of your week.

Do share how your Matcha regimen has been for you – would love to hear what other recipes you have tried. <3

  • ReplySafia QammarMarch 21, 2018 at 7:48 pm

I use the rimmel one. I’ve never tried cover girl setting powder. Looks so nice. Can’t wait to add it to my collection. I hope it will work on my shinny skin.??

  • ReplyShoghig KataroyanMarch 21, 2018 at 7:52 pm

I’ve started using the Laura mercier powder and I do like it, however I find that if I use it under the eyes, it creates tons of creasing. Maybe it’s my 30-something skin ?, but it’s not a good look.

  • ReplyAna Karina cahueMarch 21, 2018 at 8:31 pm

I have been waiting for this moment!!!! I use Laura mercier but it gets expensive and for those days that I’m just going out to brunch and coming home and washing my face… I have been wanting to have the option to have an affordable option. I need to go to the drug store and get this one ?
    Can’t wait ??

  • ReplyEIeni SamaraMarch 21, 2018 at 9:06 pm

As I am on a budget at the moment I want to thank you for the advice. At the moment I am using Rimmel setting powder and I love it. I hope in the future I get the chance to use the Laura Mercier!!! Thanks Sona ?

  • ReplySumbul AmirMarch 22, 2018 at 12:17 am

Sounds amazing. I’ve never used any setting powder. I’ve heard about “Laura Mercier” i.e superb but its too pricey. Finally here is the best of drugstore . Yay. (:

  • ReplyDomniki SarriMarch 22, 2018 at 2:41 am

I use W7’s Banana Dreams and it’s my favourite!! Excellent post!

  • ReplyDelinaMarch 22, 2018 at 5:07 am

I have more mature skin and havent used powders for fear it will make me look more dry and aging but know so many people do and would like for my foundation to look better by the end if the day. I will give the CG option a try, especially sincebit it is so affordable! Thanks for the recommendation Sona!

  • ReplySaralrb2602March 22, 2018 at 10:12 am

I Already have a lot of setting powder right now but I definitely will try this one when I will finish the others !!! The l’oreal Gel liner !!!

  • ReplyMaureen KedzieMarch 22, 2018 at 11:54 am

I’ve never actually tried putting powder on with a beauty blender before. Crazy I know! ? But I’ve always been worried it would come out looking cakey. I’ll definitely need to give it a try. I’m using and elf eyebrow pencil that I’m liking right now and I will always try drugstore mascaras because they have been so great lately! And who doesn’t like to save some money?

  • ReplyAna Karina CahueMarch 23, 2018 at 2:18 pm

I read this post a few days ago so I went to the drugstore and bought it. I am wearing it today and will try it out some more over the weekend. So far so good!!
    PS
I will be attending a concert and will be taking tons of pics with flash, keeping my fingers crossed that there’s no flashback. I did take a selfie at home and it looked fine BUT… we shall see :D

  • ReplyAstrid LeydenMarch 23, 2018 at 3:55 pm

Haven’t tried that yet but I’m excited! So far I’ve been using the laura mercie, cover fx translucent and charlotte tilburry.. I’ve wanted to use the lamer one but it’s waaayy over my budget lol. But I’ll try this affordable one :). Great post!

  • ReplyJanina MarinMarch 29, 2018 at 4:14 pm

I should be doing my homework instead of finding all these helpful makeup tips!! Haha I tried the maybelline setting powder and honestly I dislike it! And I’m not trying to purchase something expensive until I’ve conquered my makeup skills! But now that I’m aware of this bad boy I’m going to try it! This may be silly but can you do a video on how to set powder? sorry I’m new to this whole world! Thanks again for the tips
