The Genius Way to Cover Your Gray Roots

hair
how to cover your roots

If you color your hair, you know this struggle WAY too well. Just a few weeks after coloring your hair, those roots start to come out. And let’s face it, we all don’t have the luxury to see our colorist every couple of weeks! So to help you buy time between salon visits, I’m letting you guys in on my personal secret for hiding my grays! Keep on reading for the drugstore product I swear by to extend the life of my hair color!

Found this hair pic the day I got a fresh color by @morganparks901 ? PS! My lipstick is the @personacosmetics OG mixed with a clear balm. #haircolor #brunette #hairstyles

THE MAGIC PRODUCT

There are tons of different kinds of root cover up products on the market from powders, to color sticks and pens, to sprays to permanent home dye kits. I’ve tried a lot of these and have paid up to $50 dollars for some of them, but I’m here to tell you my favorite one is under $10 bucks! It’s the L’ Oréal Magic Root Cover Up and you can buy it on Amazon!  I love it because it not only helps me cover up my grays, but it gives my hair texture and body, much like a texturizing spray would. I use the dark brown shade because my hair is naturally brown and I feel this looks most natural. It also comes in 7 other shades.

L'oreal root cover up

HOW TO USE IT

  1. Pick out a shade that is closest to your hair color.
  2. Hold the spray 2-3 inches from your hairline and spray evenly where needed.
  3. Wait for it to dry before combing it through to blend with the rest of your hair

This is one of my holy-grail hair maintenance products that I’ve been using for years (read more about my favorite hair products here!) Though I wish I could see my hair colorist every few weeks to maintain my grays, this product definitely saves me in between appointments! What products do you guys use to cover your roots?? Let me know in the comments below.

Great post X but I have a thought…why do us Women have to colour/hide our greys? Men don’t, in fact some of the most famous beautiful Women in the world are grey, Judi Dench, Hellen Mirren, meryl Streep, Jamie Lee Curtis, I think it’s all about wearing our grey hair like a badge of honour X

I’ve been wanting to use this. How long does it usually last? Great post Sona.

    • ReplyElisaAugust 30, 2018 at 9:46 pm

      It washes out with shampoo.

    • ReplySimplySonaAugust 31, 2018 at 4:31 pm

      Hi Jeanette,
This spray is temporary so it comes out when you wash your hair!

  • ReplyMichelleAugust 30, 2018 at 7:40 pm

Great tip Sona! I’m 34 and those grays are coming in. Nice timing! Thanks!

  • ReplyHuda razzaqAugust 30, 2018 at 8:44 pm

But it always stains my hands and my shirt ☹️ And it makes my roots so crunchy

    • ReplySimplySonaAugust 31, 2018 at 4:31 pm

Have you tried wearing a glove babe? Brushing it through can also help with the “crunchiness”!

  • ReplyShirinAugust 30, 2018 at 9:42 pm

I tried this Spray and didn´t cover my roots or greys. The colour didn´t come out enough.

    • ReplySimplySonaAugust 31, 2018 at 4:34 pm

Did you try a darker shade?? Let me know!

  • ReplyJennifer BairdAugust 31, 2018 at 7:08 am

Fantastic tip!! I could probably let my grey start showing but I am very attached to my red hair so I am not ready to part with it yet LOL!

    • ReplySimplySonaAugust 31, 2018 at 4:33 pm

LOL one day we will let go!

Hi Sona, thanks for blogging about grays! I asked you a question about this in your YouTube comments a couple weeks ago. I also use the Clairol root spray and root touch up, whatever I have time for. The root spray never seems to dry all the way though?? Maybe I’m doing something wrong there?
I am 46 now and I grayed very early (genetics), think I was all gray or white as I say by age 30, started covering those pesky sparklers in my late 20’s. Which means I’ve been coloring for 20 years….I’m so over it…the time/money. Who thinks I should just let it go? Sona, what do you think?
